Protocol - Metformin (Glucophage) for Diabetic Patients
The following steps should be taken by diabetic patients taking Metformin (Glucophage) and scheduled for a CT scan with
iodine injection:
1. The patient should STOP taking the Metformin (Glucophage) the morning of the CT
scan and not resume it for 48 hours after the exam has been performed.
2. The patient should have a creatinine blood test (lab work) drawn 48 hours after the
iodine injection. A written order for this test should be provided to the patient
or
an order should be called into the lab. The lab test should be performed at a facility
that can provide "stat" results.
3. If the lab results are normal Metformin (Glucophage) may be resumed.
4. If the lab results are abnormal the patient should contact their
Primary Care Physician before resuming Metformin (Glucophage).
5. If the patient is hesitant or concerned about being off their diabetic medication of
Metformin (Glucophage) for the 72 hours required, they should consult their
Primary Care Physician prior to having the CT scan with iodine injection.
